What the domain age checker shows

Two dates matter, and they are often different. The registration date is when the name was first created at the registry: this is the "domain age" most tools report, read here live from the registry over RDAP rather than from a cached WHOIS copy. The first archived date is when the Wayback Machine first saved a page on the domain, which is the age of the website that lived there. A name registered in 2008 whose first snapshot is 2024 was almost certainly dropped and re-registered, and search engines treat that as a new site with none of the old history.

How to read the result

• Old registration, continuous archive: the domain has been held and used for years. This is the profile of an aged domain worth paying for.
• Old registration, gaps in the archive: the domain expired and was picked up again, or sat parked. Check what was on it before the gap; our guide to checking domain history shows the five ways.
• Recent registration, old archive: the name dropped and someone re-registered it. The backlinks may still be live, but the age is the new date, not the old one.
• No registry record: the name is free to register, or its registry publishes no RDAP data. Try a WHOIS lookup for the extension.

Age is not authority

A fourteen-year-old domain with no links is worth less than a four-year-old one with links from real sites in your niche. Does domain age affect SEO?

On its own, very little. What an old domain usually brings is a link profile and an archive of content, and those are what search engines reward. Age without links or history is just a date.

Why does the registration date differ from the WHOIS date I saw elsewhere?

Many checkers show a cached WHOIS copy that can be months old, or the date of the last transfer. This page reads the registry's own RDAP record at the time you ask, and caches the answer for a day.

How many lookups can I run?

Visitors get 25 lookups a day per connection. DomCop members get 200, and every domain page in the app shows the age, the Wayback history and the backlinks together.

Which extensions work?

Every extension whose registry publishes RDAP, which is all generic extensions (.com, .net, .org, .info, .xyz and the rest) and most country codes. For a country code without RDAP the registration date shows as unknown and the Wayback history still works.
